Through its global outreach and educational development program, the United International Business Schools organization (UIBS) takes great pleasure in announcing a new partnership with the International School of Business Administration (ISBA) in India. ISBA is a newly developed school, part of the EDGE Group of Institutes that operates several schools across the Central India region. ISBA is headed by founder and owner Mr. Ranjan Mittal, who was recently appointed as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Global Council for Management Education, the academic council of UIBS.

ISBA is committed to offering its students an international education with extensive industry exposure, and currently promotes international Bachelor and Master of Business Administration programs (iBBA and iMBA respectively) that provide an unmatched competitive advantage over other schools in the region. ISBA’s campus in Indore, India (Madhya Pradesh region) is currently undergoing renovations and will open by the beginning of August. The school’s first session is scheduled to start in September 2010. ISBA also has further expansion plans across the country over the next few academic years.

The iBBA and iMBA programs lead to an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Degree Program (UGP/PGP) awarded by ISBA and a private international Bachelor or Master degree awarded by the Swiss-based United International Business Schools organization. ISBA has also submitted an application for affiliation with a local Indian public university that is fully recognized by the Indian University Grants Commission (UGC) and Distance Education Council (DEC) with the purpose of allowing ISBA students to sit exams and be awarded a BBA or MBA degree from the university upon completion of the study program.

The UIBS team is pleased to see its global operations take off through its partnership with ISBA in India, and looks forward to exploring further educational developments worldwide.

Fostering inter-campus exchanges and networking, several graduate students from all campuses recently joined a seminar course in International Financial Management at our new Zurich campus, part of the International University of Switzerland.

The course was offered by long-time professor Carl Pitchford from the UK. Mr. Pitchford is active in the field of finance, auditing and management consulting with major banks and financial institutions, teaches Finance and Accounting related courses at our Antwerp and Brussels campuses, and teaches as a visiting professor at our Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia campuses, as well as at the University of Lille and the ESCA School of Management in Casablanca, Morocco.

“Attending the course in Zurich was a great experience”, says Nicolas Ceusters from Belgium (Antwerp campus). “We were lucky enough to meet up with some of the other graduate students from the Barcelona campus and we had quite some work to do because of the intensive nature of the course, but we certainly had a good time in Switzerland. I can only recommend others to join in the future, being it for one course only or even for full-time studies in Zurich!”

Full-time International Bachelor/BBA and Master/MBA Degree Programs are scheduled to start at the Zurich campus in October 2010. The complete Master of Science in Financial Management program is offered at all campuses. The graduate specialization program, Master in Global Banking and Financial Markets, is also offered at the Barcelona, Brussels and Zurich campuses.

Fostering inter-campus exchanges and networking, several graduate students from the Antwerp and Barcelona campuses recently joined a seminar course in Fashion Management at our Madrid campus, part of the International University of Southern Europe.

The course was offered by visiting professor Joe Di Donna from Italy. Mr. Di Donna is active in the field of fashion and business consulting, and teaches Marketing and Fashion Management related courses at business and design schools in Milan, Paris, Shanghai and other locations around the world.

“This was an amazing experience” says Mitra Kazemian, MBA student from Canada (Barcelona campus). “We had the chance to meet up with students from the Antwerp campus and at the same time visit yet another wonderful city in Spain. I love Madrid!”

Coralie Dalcq, MBA student from Belgium (Antwerp campus), agrees, “Originally I was planning to apply for a Master in Fashion Management at the University of Antwerp but instead went to the Antwerp International Business School for my graduate studies. [the school] did a wonderful job in organizing this course for us as I now also have Fashion Management as part of my MBA program! Thank you!”

Full-time International Bachelor/BBA and Master/MBA Degree Programs are scheduled to start at the Madrid campus in October 2010. The complete graduate specialization program, Master in Fashion Management, will be offered from October 2009 onwards at the Antwerp and Barcelona campuses.

Students from the Barcelona Business School recently attended a conference with the Belgian former Prime Minister Mr. Guy Verhofstadt.

Organized partly in English and partly in French, the conference handled such topics as the current worldwide financial and economic situation, a further integration of the European Union, and other contemporary issues such as energy, terrorism and society in general. With good reason, the conference was named “A New Age for Empires”.

“It was one of the most interesting conferences I have attended so far. Being from Germany myself and having little background knowledge on Belgian politicians and governments, Mr. Verhofstadt certainly seems like a very knowledgeable and interesting man. The topics he covered were profound and definitely reflective of our modern 21st century society. Making jokes every once in a while makes it even more enjoyable to listen to him”, says Katrin Schöppler from Germany, currently an undergraduate student in the Business Studies program.

The invitation to attend came from the local Belgian Consulate, headed by Honorable Consul Mrs. Karina Tuytschaever, in cooperation with the Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in Catalonia.

Students and staff from the Barcelona Business School wish to thank the Consul and the members of the Consulate and Chamber for extending this invitation and for organizing this first-class conference!

The Antwerp International Business School will relocate from its current location to Meirbrug, at the crossing with Meir and St. Katelijnevest. The new campus is very centrally located, right at the heart of Antwerp’s bustling city center with several tram, underground and bus stops nearby. Groenplaats, Meir and De Keyserlei are all within walking distance from the new campus location.

The move to Meirbrug is scheduled for the first half of September 2008, as the new campus is currently being made ready for use. Moving to these new premises will give UIBS the opportunity to continue its expansion and to further enhance its outstanding learning environment in the city of Antwerp.

The article talks about last year’s graduates from the SME management (“KMO-management” in Dutch) program offered at “Karel de Grote Hogeschool”, a local public college in Antwerp, Belgium. Students were asked what they have been up to after having graduated and how they feel about their previous studies.

Some students are working, though most of the others have continued their studies in either a Master program at the graduate level or in a bridging program at another local college or university. Several students applied for an International Master/MBA Degree Program at Antwerp International Business School, of which the first group of students is expected to graduate at the end of June this year.

For those who decided to continue their studies, the most important reason was the feeling they still lacked a certain theoretical background and also because they would like to specialize further in a specific field of management at a higher academic level.

Attached is the complete article as it appeared in the HR.Square magazine for those who would like to read it in its entirety. Antwerp International Business School offers international study programs at the undergraduate (Associate/ABA, Bachelor/BBA) and graduate (Master/MBA) level, entirely in English. The study programs are open to members of the international community and also to Belgian nationals who wish to study in English in Antwerp, their hometown.

Starting October 2008, Barcelona Business School will offer a new Master in Design Management, targeting two distinct groups of students: designers and managers.

The Master in Design Management is intended for those who are, or who want to be, active in the world of design and who would like to complement their previous studies and experience with management studies at the graduate level. The program is also intended for those who already have a professional or academic background in business and who are truly interested in design.

The Master program transforms designers into managers and also enables managers and entrepreneurs to bridge the gap between managerial skills, entrepreneurial initiative and designer opinions and attitudes. Sooner or later, as a designer, you will get in contact with people who manage and coordinate large projects or companies. Coordinating involves taking managerial decisions to ensure the future success of the project at hand.

The Master in Design Management can easily be combined with any other Master program into a Dual Master program, which allows for an ideal focus on the required qualities to develop and manage a successful design business. Electives can be chosen from any of the other core courses and orientation courses.

Orientation Courses of the Master in Design Management program include:

Fundamentals of Design Management

Design, Marketing and Innovation

Design, Strategy and Transformation

Design Management in Practice

“There has been a huge demand for the product in Europe for quite some time and with the recent kidnapping events, the product introduction is very timely”, says Bruce Cummings, Chief Executive Officer. “We have been looking for solid distributors to manage each in-country launch and settled on a new partner, Ion-Europe”, says Cummings. The company is a new venture formed specifically to launch ‘ionKids’ in five European countries. “They have ample capital and a solid executive team co-managed by Henk Dijkmans, who has 30 years of experience in the automotive branch as Sales and Marketing director for Renault, Fiat-Auto and Mercedes-Smart and they know how to penetrate the market”, stated Cummings.

The Barcelona Business School will relocate from its current location to Calle Aragón, at the crossing with Calle Muntaner. The new campus is very centrally located in Barcelona’s business district L’Eixample with several metro and bus stops nearby. Paseo Gracia, Plaza Universidad and Plaza Catalunya are all within walking distance from the new campus location.

The move to Calle Aragón is scheduled for the second half of February 2007, as the new campus is currently being made ready for use. Moving to these new premises will give UIBS the opportunity to continue its expansion and to further enhance its outstanding learning environment in the city of Barcelona.

Barcelona Business School, founded in 2002 by the Global Council for Management Education (GCME), became an integral part of the coordinating United International Business Schools (UIBS) organization in early 2006.

UIBS serves as an umbrella organization for schools, colleges and universities offering business and management education at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level as well as corporate training and executive education programs.

UIBS is also active in the field of international networking between educational institutions and companies and organizations. Study abroad and exchange programs are developed and promoted in cooperation with the organization’s members and partners. GCME functions as the organization’s academic council.

Taking into consideration the never-ending trend towards globalization and the need for high-quality business and management education, plans were developed to open sister campuses in Antwerp (Belgium), Brussels (Belgium) and Valencia (Spain), some of Europe’s trendiest and fastest growing cities. The expansion will allow for an even greater international focus as students will have the option to easily switch between campuses and thus be provided with the opportunity to enrich their cultural knowledge even further.

Since the introduction of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), we have put great effort in making sure that all our International Undergraduate (IUGDP) and Graduate (IGDP) Degree Programs are based on and fully compatible with the new European guidelines for higher education as outlined in the Bologna agreements.

ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload of a full-time student during one academic year. As one credit amounts to approximately 25 to 30 study hours, the workload of a full-time study program amounts to approximately 1500 to 1800 study hours per academic year.

Based on the information available about the guidelines for ECTS compatibility as outlined in the Bologna agreements, we have reviewed our 90-credit Associate/ABA degree program, our 180-credit Bachelor/BBA degree program and our 60-credit Master/MBA program to be in full compliance with the new European guidelines.

All our International Undergraduate and Graduate Degree Programs also maintain full compatibility with the American educational system. The course load can be expressed in semester hours as well as in quarter hours, with each credit representing one hour of class per week. When comparing both credit systems, 1 quarter hour equals 1 ECTS credit and 1 semester hour equals 1.5 ECTS credits, assuming a quarter lasts 10 weeks and a semester lasts 15 weeks.

Unlike many other schools and universities in Europe, we use an academic calendar that is based on a quarter system instead of a semester system. The following provides a basic comparison between both systems:

Semester-based

14 weeks of classes per semester
1 weeks of evaluations per semester
Total of 15 weeks / 30 ECTS credits per semester
Total of 30 weeks / 60 ECTS credits per academic year
750 to 900 study hours per semester

Quarter-based

3 x 10 weeks of classes and evaluations per quarter
Total of 10 weeks / 20 ECTS credits per quarter
Total of 30 weeks / 60 ECTS credits per academic year
500 to 600 study hours per quarter

We believe the advantages of a quarter system are as follows:

Courses are spread over 3 quarters instead of over 2 semesters, resulting in a smaller number of courses per quarter than the number of courses per semester, thus allowing a better focus on the courses offered each quarter.

While the study pressure of a semester system is usually concentrated during the evaluation periods at the end of the semester, a quarter system allows for a more equal spread of the study pressure during the whole academic year.

With the use of a quarter system, it is easier to implement a system of permanent student evaluation as students will get more feedback faster, thus providing better options of self-evaluation throughout the academic year.
