The United International Business Schools organization (UIBS) is proud to announce the institutional certification by the Swiss EduQua label of its higher education and career development services offered at its main campus in Zurich, Switzerland.

EduQua is the Swiss quality label that sets and reviews minimum quality criteria for further adult education. The six key quality criteria are related to the study programs, learning outcomes, school presentation, academic services, faculty and staff, and quality assurance and development.

The confirmation of institutional certification came in May 2013 following a decision from the lead auditor of the SwissTS certification agency that was based on the review of a comprehensive self-evaluation report and an on-campus site visit organized earlier in April 2013.

Congratulations to all faculty and staff members without whose commendable degree of motivation and dedication to quality higher education it would not have been possible to achieve yet another important milestone in the history of our organization!

The United International Business Schools organization (UIBS) is proud to announce the extended accreditation by the European Council for Business Education (ECBE) for its Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree programs offered at its campuses in Belgium, Spain and Switzerland.

ECBE is a registered affiliate of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) and is a membership-driven, non-profit accreditation organization with member schools from around the world. ECBE assures the quality of degree programs and stands for continuous improvement in business education. The accreditation standards set forth by ECBE are based on the European guidelines for higher education as outlined in the Bologna agreements.

The confirmation of accreditation came in May 2012 following a decision from the ECBE Board of Commissioners that was based on the review of an updated self-evaluation report and on-campus site visits organized by a team of evaluators earlier this academic year in December and May. We are proud of the fact that ours was the first (and currently still the only) business school in Belgium and Spain to achieve ECBE accreditation.

Congratulations to all faculty and staff members without whose commendable degree of motivation and dedication to quality higher education it would not have been possible to achieve this important milestone in the history of our organization!

China Versus the West: The Global Power Shift of the 21st Century

The author, a leading specialist on the international and Asian economy and business, presents the most comprehensive picture of the changing power balance between the emerging superpower China and the “old” developed economies of the West: mainly the US, Europe and Japan. The reader can clearly see in what areas and to what extent China has become the world leader, in what areas it is catching up and in what areas the West retains its superiority and has a chance to strengthen it further.

At the same time, I. Tselichtchev unveils a breath-taking story of the global economy and business in the brave new world which is non-”West-led” and where major growth dynamics are coming from large emerging economies. A radically changing economic environment requires new government policies and business strategies. The book contains many valuable suggestions and ideas. Using his own analytical framework, the author presents a set of options and alternatives for Western businesses in the wake of China’s production and export offensive.

The book provides a uniquely sharp and thought-provoking analysis of the factors behind the global crisis of 2008-2009, largely different from what we see in other publications, and examines its implications for the global power balance. I. Tselichtchev vividly shows that it was not global, but Western crisis of a structural character which drastically changed the China-West power balance in the former’s favor. He provides strong arguments showing that today’s China is structurally and macro-economically stronger than most countries of the West. This leads him to rethinking the very essence of the Chinese model of capitalism and to its new definition. He expresses unconventional, sometimes controversial, but well-founded views about China’s problems and weaknesses and the prospects for its political evolution.

The book ends with invaluable insights into China’s unique role in the world economic history, the essence of the non-”West-led” multipolar world and the positions of its major players. Arguing that from now on no single country will be ever able to “rule the world”, it shows new opportunities dynamic China is opening for the West.

Thoroughly analyzing and discussing a wide range of the key, often complicated issues which are now in the focus of the world’s attention, the book remains very reader-friendly. It is written in the form of an unconstrained dialogue with the reader, containing a lot of the author’s on-the-spot impressions, interesting facts, remarks and quotations.

China Versus the West is a must reading for everyone who wants to know more about the global developments, China and the West, and also, perhaps, to get valuable inputs and hints to find his or her own place in today’s new world. It is highly recommended for policy-makers, business people, academics, analysts and journalists. It is a valuable source for professors and students of the universities and business schools.

Ten years ago, in October 2002, the Barcelona Business School was established by a team of academics as an independent private business school focusing on flexible business and management studies, and mainly targeting international students.

Today, the Barcelona Business School is one of three schools that make up the International University of Southern Europe, together with the Madrid Business School and the Valencia Business School. Since late 2006, the schools in Spain, and also those established later in Belgium, Switzerland and Japan, are operated by the Zurich based United International Business Schools organization (UIBS).

The Barcelona Business School started out with academic year 2002-2003 on the first floor of a residential building on Paseo Sant Gervasio in the northern part of the city. The campus was approximately 250 square meters in size and enabled the school to start with a limited number of students. Later in 2006, upon continuation of the school’s operations by UIBS, the school moved to its current facilities on Calle Aragon in the Eixample business district. Approximately 400 square meters in an office building gave the school improved facilities and further growth possibilities.

Currently, with a continuously growing number of students, the time was right for the school to take the next step in its carefully planned growth stage, moving to a very modern office building on Rambla de Catalunya 2-4, located literally right around the corner from Placa Catalunya, Barcelona’s main square.

The new campus, where classes will be organized from January 2012 onwards, boasts several large classrooms for up to 24 students, a dedicated student lounge with kitchen, and sufficient office and open work space. The classrooms will be fitted with leather seats, spacious tables, flipcharts and whiteboards, individual air-conditioning regulators, and wireless high-speed internet access. Pictures of the new campus will be posted in the near future on our Facebook page as well as in our photo gallery. Details on how to reach the new campus will be announced on the contact page of our website.

We very much look forward to another 10 successful years and would hereby like to take the opportunity to thank all of our students, faculty, staff, partners, and especially our alumni for their continued dedication and enthusiasm towards the school’s past and future endeavors.

Thank you for an amazing 10 years in Barcelona!

Fostering inter-campus exchanges and networking, several graduate students from all campuses recently joined a graduate seminar course in Asian Management at the Valencia Business School that took place during the mid-quarter break of the fall quarter.

The course was offered by Dr. Ivan Tselichtchev from Russia, the local Representative Director at the Tokyo Business School. Professor Tselichtchev is involved also with the Niigata University of Management, is a regular participant and speaker at the Global Business Meetings organized by Horasis, and is a commentator for the CNBC TV channel. Specializing in business and management in Asia, he is the author of the best-seller “Asia’s Turning Point” and co-author of many others. He has written more than 300 articles in English, Japanese and Russian published by prominent academic magazines and newspapers around the world.

“We had a good time in Valencia during the break and learned a lot during the course. It focused intensively on Asian economies and working with Asian companies, and was taught by a very knowledgeable professor”, says Jonas Albinsson from Sweden (Campus Barcelona).

Dr. Ivan Tselichtchev, Associate Professor at the Tokyo Business School, was recently invited to speak at the 7th Global China Business Meeting in Valencia on November 7-8, 2011. Next to his participation in our organization’s academic council, and his professor status at our campus in Tokyo, Dr. Tselichtchev is a professor at the Niigata University of Management in Japan, co-author of the recent bestseller “Asia’s Turning Point”, and author of the upcoming book “China versus the West: The Global Power Shift of the 21st Century”.

Along with his colleague Mr. Gour Saraff, Associate Dean at the Valencia Business School, over 400 business leaders and key government officials met under the theme “Globalizing Chinese Firms”. The theme reflects the increased emphasis of Chinese firms to build global and sustainable brands.

The event was hosted and organized by Horasis, a global visions community committed to enact visions for a sustainable future and providing a unique platform for companies from emerging markets to globalize their organizations through regional meetings with focus on China, India, Russia and the Arab world.

“Delegates will debate the impact of the global economic crisis and how China is shaping the post-crisis world. China’s lead in the global economic recovery has been underscored by effective government stimulus measures, robust domestic consumption and increasing economic integration on a regional and global level. The 2011 Global China Business Meeting will attach importance on the increasing role that China plays in global trade and investment.”

Mr. Gour Saraff, the local Associate Dean at the Valencia Business School of the International University of Southern Europe, was recently invited to speak at the 7th Global China Business Meeting in Valencia on November 7-8, 2011. Next to his academic responsibilities at our campus in Valencia, Mr. Saraff is the Director of the Europe India Chamber of Commerce in Spain.

Along with his colleague Dr. Ivan Tselichtchev, Representative Director at the Tokyo Business School, over 400 business leaders and key government officials met under the theme “Globalizing Chinese Firms”.

Alumnus Victoria Tregub from the Antwerp International Business School was recently featured in an article published in The Bulletin magazine. The article is titled “Let’s get down to business studies” and takes a look at Belgian’s management schools that offer MBA programs to both young and senior professionals who find themselves in a cutthroat job market where every qualification counts.

“Victoria Tregub, 24, an American with Russian-Ukrainian roots, has lived in Belgium since she was four. She completed a BA in Communication at Vesalius College and after several months spent working in the US, returned to Belgium to enroll in a Master’s program in Business Administration at the Antwerp International Business School [UIBS]. Today, she works at NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, press and media section”

“Even though I could have studied in the US, I chose to do both my undergraduate degree and my master’s in Belgium. I immediately chose [UIBS] because of its flexibility. I never even considered other schools. [UIBS] allows students to step in to their chosen program at any time. Additionally, it offers courses in English, has very small classes and focuses heavily on the use of technology. Students all have to use a laptop in class. We were constantly making PowerPoint presentations or going online to research topics. I also liked the fact that many case studies we discussed were real-life projects or Harvard case-studies.”

“MBAs are notoriously intense courses that place significant ‘real-life’ demands on students. “A lot of emphasis is placed on project management,” says Victoria. “For one of the projects I worked on we were given the option either to create a complete business plan for the development of schools in Turkey or to create a women’s television network in a country of choice. Working in teams is crucial. You also need to be able to conduct research and present the end product in front of an audience. The challenge of a full-time MBA definitively lies in being able to combine writing your thesis and still focusing on your day-to-day coursework.”

“And finally, after months (or years) of hard labor: graduation day. “Since [UIBS] has campuses in various countries around the world, our graduation ceremony was held in Barcelona, with graduate students from all the campuses gathered together. That is when you really get the feeling that you have studied in an international environment that has prepared you for the real world,” she says with a smile.”

The Antwerp International Business School is a private and independent educational institution offering flexible business and management studies at the Undergraduate/Bachelor/BBA, Graduate/Master/MBA, and Executive/EBBA/EMBA/EDBA level in English.

Ranked as the third most global city on earth, Tokyo was recently listed by Forbes magazine as one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Located on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu, Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the largest metropolitan area of the country with more than 13 million people living in the greater Tokyo area. The city’s most well-known landmarks include the Imperial Palace and the Tokyo Tower.

“Since beauty is subjective, we surveyed city specialists from a range of fields, including urban planning, architecture and sustainable development. Respondents include Reynolds and Michael Kaufman, an architect at Chicago-based architectural firm Goettsch Partners, as well as Raymond Levitt, director of the construction program in civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University, Tony McGuirk, an urban designer, architect, and Chairman of BDP in London, J. Hugh O’Donnell of urban engineering firm MMM International, and Ken Drucker, New York design director of architectural firm HOK.”

Hello everyone!

My name is Lorenzo and I graduated from the Antwerp International Business School in June 2010 with a Graduate/Master Degree in International Management. I decided to go for this graduate degree after my Chemical Engineering studies to give me a good foundation on how businesses work as well as to give me an aid in achieving a future management position. I am currently working as a Project Engineer with Tata Steel, a multinational steel making company in the UK.

Even though I only started a few months ago, I have had numerous chances to apply the knowledge gained at UIBS. As a project engineer it is needless to say that the Project Management module has been very important in ensuring a smooth transition between the education and work environments. The time management and organizational skills have so far helped me to progress in the projects I have been a key part of. I see that compared to engineers who are at the same level as I am, I am much more aware of how the business part of it all works.

The course modules which have assisted me the most so far are those in the area of Operations Management due to the nature of the business; however the Financial Management modules are also coming in very handy when needing to calculate the profitability of projects and where to spend the working capital. The Managing Across Cultures module has helped me settle into a completely new environment with a lot of colleagues coming from different backgrounds. Within a few weeks of starting work, I had established good work relationships.

I am sure that in the future I will be able to apply an even greater part of the knowledge gained while at UIBS, but so far into my career I have been surprised by how much I have used already and I am very glad I have gone with my decision of following the business and management program I did.

The United International Business Schools organization is proud to announce the initial accreditation of the International University of Southern Europe by the European Council for Business Education (ECBE) for its Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration degree programs offered at its Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia campuses.

ECBE is a registered affiliate of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) and is a membership-driven, non-profit accreditation organization with 74 member schools from around the world. ECBE assures the quality of degree programs and stands for continuous improvement in business education. The accreditation standards set forth by ECBE are based on the European guidelines for higher education as outlined in the Bologna agreements.

The confirmation of accreditation came in December 2010 following a decision from the ECBE Board of Commissioners that was based on the review of a thorough self-evaluation report and an on-campus site visit organized by a team of evaluators earlier this year in October. We are proud of the fact that ours is the first business school in Spain to achieve ECBE accreditation.

Congratulations to all faculty and staff members without whose commendable degree of motivation and dedication to quality higher education it would not have been possible to achieve this important milestone in the history of our organization!

The start of the first academic year of the International University of Switzerland on October 4, 2010 marks an important milestone in the history of the United International Business Schools organization.

“With the start of our new campus in Zurich, we have laid the foundations for a permanent presence in Switzerland”, says Mr. Thierry Kirschstein, Managing Director. “We are strongly committed to the further development of our organization in this country and have initiated a range of measures to ensure that the quality of our study programs is outstanding from the very beginning, building on the experience and success that we have attained at our campuses in Belgium and Spain.”

Mrs. Nancy Michels, the newly appointed Associate Dean of the Zurich campus adds that “the students we have welcomed last week are indeed very motivated and open-minded youngsters, both at undergraduate and graduate level. We have secured teaching agreements with prominent people from both the academic and business community in the greater Zurich area and we are convinced that we will have a positive impact on the future of our students by bringing an excellent combination of theory and practice into the classroom.”

The academic year 2010 – 2011 opened on Friday, October 1, 2010 with the welcoming and registration of new students, and continued on Monday, October 4, 2010 with the start of classes. The campus is located within the Regus Seefeld Center, conveniently situated in the city center along the shores of Lake Zurich and easily accessible with public transportation.

To ensure future development, several new study programs will be introduced in the following months, including an Executive MBA and DBA program, as well as several study abroad programs to welcome exchange students. For further information about the school and study programs, feel free to contact the admissions department or visit our website.

The United International Business Schools organization (UIBS) is proud to announce its acceptance for participation in the Principles for Responsible Management Education initiative (PRME), backed by the United Nations Organization.

By adopting the 6 Principles set by the initiative, our organization pledges to engage in a continuous process of improvement with regards to the application of the Principles, to share information on progress, and to contribute to the learning experience of participating academic institutions worldwide. More specifically, the 6 Principles serve as a framework of continuous engagement:

Principle 1 – Purpose: To develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy;

Principle 2 – Values: To incorporate into your academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the UN Global Compact;

Principle 3 – Method: To create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership;

Principle 4 – Research: To engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances the understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economical value;

Principle 5 – Partnership: To interact with managers of business corporations to extend the knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges; and

Principle 6 – Dialogue: To facilitate and support dialogue and debate among educators, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability.

The PRME were developed in 2007 by an international task force of business school deans, university presidents and representatives of various educational organizations, following an idea introduced by the United Nations Global Compact of developing a principle-based global engagement platform for academic institutions worldwide. The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.

Recently, Samer Ajour, one of the graduate students at Barcelona Business School, participated in the Catalonia Model United Nations (C’MUN), an event organized by Barcelona’s City Council and by the Generalitat de Catalunya, Catalonia’s regional government. “Participating in C’MUN and representing the International University of Southern Europe, meeting a lot of graduate students from around the world, and learning how to discuss topics of international importance, was one of the most interesting activities I have engaged in so far”, says Samer, originally from Lebanon. “I would also like to thank the management and staff of the Barcelona Business School for giving me the opportunity to represent the school in a C’MUN delegation”.

The event was organized over 4 days and saw more than 350 participants from all over the world. Samer represented Egypt in the UNESCO committee, a choice made due to having experienced issues similar to the ones discussed during the event. “The main topics at the event were human rights, labor organizations and UNESCO. We discussed several concerns regarding the influence of new technology over communication and media. Consensus was then reached after much deliberation and reflection”.

The general purpose of a Model United Nations is to organize a simulation of the actual United Nations Organization with the aim of educating participants about matters related to communication, globalization and diplomacy. Samer believes that “participating in a Model United Nations is a unique experience as it increases your ability to debate, negotiate and find solutions for global issues”.
